Knitting Question: What is your thing about mittens? Or your favorite pair of mittens you've knit?

Sherri's favorite mittens she's knit are her Norwegian Mittens from Elizabeth Zimmermann's book Knitting Around

Tamara's favorite thing about mittens is how warm they keep tiny hands. (Any hands really but it mattered even more when they were tiny). Tamara follows the same simple mitten recipe for almost every mitten she knits that she pulled together from a combination of the mitten numbers in the Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns and her own notes from knitting all the mittens.

Her super simple recipe for Adult Mittens in worsted weight yarn is: Cast on 32 stitches. K2P2 ribbing for 3ish inches. Then start the normal side-gusset increases up to 13 stitches on the thumb gusset. Put the thumb stitches on waste yarn for later and continue up the hand for another 2ish inches. Decrease every other round down to 16 stitches. Kitchener the tops of the mittens together. And you're done.....except for the thumbs.

Mulligan

Sherri:
The Machete Shoppe yarn was too limp for the Etude pattern by Ririko. She will save the pattern for a yarn with more body and is now successfully knitting the yarn into Folded by Veera Välimäki

Tamara:
The top down tunic design that she started out of Lamb's Pride Worsted in the beautiful Plum Smoke color eventually had to be ripped back. Tamara loves Lamb's Pride Worsted. A lot. But she bought this particular yarn as a Mill End or Seconds for a hugely discounted price. Normally Mill Ends work work for design but this batch is too thick and thin for a consistent look in sample garment photos. So now this yarn wants to be very, very pretty mittens.

Inspiration and Fantasies

After the mishap with mill ends - a new sweater out of Lamb's Pride Worsted. Deciding between the colors of Persian Peacock, Prairie Fire, Raspberry, Warm Caramel or Bronze.
New Sherri Pullover for winter hiking. The old one is getting too, too worn out.

Review: Brown Sheep Yarn

Sherri and Tamara talk about Brown Sheep Company and yarn. Tamara has actually been to the factory/shop outside of Mitchell, Nebraska. The land has been family owned for over 100 years - first as a farm, then as a mill when farm markets got so tough in the 1980s. In 2020, they started a process to reuse up to 90% of their wastewater to "go green" and conserve resources. Tamara has used Lamb's Pride Worsted in lots of projects over the years. And both Sherri and Tamara have recently used the new Prairie Spun DK in projects.
